About the producer / region:

Coffee held no significance in Tanzania for two centuries until the 19th century. Since then, its commercialisation surged, and coffee gained honour as one of the country's top agricultural exports.

While neighbouring countries thrived off the commodity, Tanzania faced the threat of coffee wilt disease and other environmental challenges, stunting its production growth. Currently, Tanzania’s coffee faces a different problem – an aging population of producers with waning interest in their succession.

One of the main ways the government encourages the uptake of coffee cultivation is through localised Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) that ease production challenges. The Nsoga AMCOS in the Mbozi district of Songwe helped to connect a downward channel to the Nsoga River, easing access to water for processing coffee in the villages they serve.
